How to Apply a Passport in India

You can apply for a Passport either in Online or Offline. While both the process have same value, but in this article we will discuss about Online process.

Documents required

  • Proof for date of birth and citizenship.
  • A HR certificate on the letterhead, or a Bonafide Certificate from the School/College.
  • Electricity bill, Gas connection bill, Telephone bill or Water bill in your name with a valid address proof.
  • Bank account statement, Voter ID card.
  • In case of a married person, one can attach spouse’s passport copy and in case of a bachelor, one can attach parent’s passport copy.

How to apply

  • At first Register on Passport Seva Online portal (Click on Register)
  • Login with created Id and Password on Passport Seva Online portal
  • Click on "Apply for Background Verification for GEP"
  • Fill the required information in the form and submit
  • Click the "Pay and Schedule Appointment" link on the "View Saved/Submitted Applications" screen to schedule an appointment.

  • Online Payment has been made mandatory for booking appointments at all Passport Seva Kendras/Passport Offices.
Online Payment can be made using any one of the following modes:
  1. Credit/Debit Card (MasterCard and Visa)
  2. Internet Banking (State Bank of India (SBI) and Associate Banks and Other Banks)
  • Click the "Print Application Receipt" link to print the application receipt containing Application Reference Number (ARN)/Appointment Number.
  • Visit the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK)/Regional Passport Office (RPO) where appointment has been booked, along with original documents.
